What Can You Tell Me about Aluminum Trench Shields?

An aluminum trench shield is a lightweight aluminum box that it used to protect contractors or construction workers from things like unstable walls. They have static wall materials and are made with aircraft grade aluminum to make them as sturdy as possible.

What are They Used For?

Aluminum trench shields or aluminum trench boxes are used to protect a contractor or construction worker if the trench they’re working in starts to collapse or collapses totally. They are lightweight and easy to maneuver. Trench shields or boxes can be used when workers are digging a foundation, laying pipes, or laying wires for a building project. They play a role in helping keeping areas stable enough for employees to work without fear of accidents or injury.

How is an Aluminum Trench Shield Used?

You start by digging your trench or hole for whichever project you are currently working. Once the trench is dug, the aluminum trench shield or box is lowered into the trench or hole by an excavator or backhoe. As soon as the workers double check that the trench box or shield is stable, they can go to work. You can get inside the shield or box and work without worrying about a collapse. It gives the workers a piece of mind to know they can get their work done quickly and efficiently.

Design

An aluminum trench box or shield comes with a series of panels that can be manipulated as needed. They can be stacked together or pinned together to make sides. You can make two, three, or four sides respectively. The panels are two, three, four. or up to six inches thick. When you decide what type of shield or box you need for your project, you can pin the panels in place then attach the spreaders. A spreader is what will help the panels or walls hold their shape in case of a collapse or cave in. They bolt to the end sections of your panels or box and provide stability. They come in a wide variety of sizes as well. The start out around two feet tall per panel and twelve feet long, and go up to eighty feet depending on the manufacturer and materials used.

Price

Aluminum trench shields or boxes fluctuate in price. It depends on whether you choose the lightweight material or the more heavy duty one, how many you wish to purchase, and the length and width of the panels.

OSHA-Approved Aluminum Trench Shield

Aluminum trench boxes and shield are approved for use by OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Organization). There are a few guidelines that have to be followed though when you are using your trench box or shield. Your trench shield or box should sit 18 inches above the lip of the trench if you are working on a slope. You may dig two feet below the box or shield but only if the soil isn’t showing signs of sinking from the bottom. If you follow these guidelines you should be able to easily get OSHA approval.

Aluminum trench boxes or shields are a must-have for anyone who works in the construction industry. They are a great investment that is built to last and it gives both your workers and yourself the piece of mind knowing that they are safe and secure when they’re working.
